Marc Barnes’ American Literature and History class will introduce key periods of American History to junior-high level students by reading excellent and appropriate works of historical fiction, re-enacting crucial moments of American history through short skits, plays, and traditional folk songs, visiting key historical spots around Steubenville, and writing argumentative essays. The green space next to the War Memorial Building will be used for Civil War and WWI battle re-enactments. The nearbys garden will be used for sessions of Revolutionary-era agricultural practices. A good friend who puts on carriage rides will be contacted for their services. Visiting spots will include Fort Steuben and the Ohio River (Settlers and Native America), Union Cemetery and Beatty Park (Civil War), the defunct mills in the Weirton-Steubenville Area and the model train exhibit on Fourth Street (Industrial Revolution), the Steubenville museum (WWII), several churches and houses along the waterfront (as particularly good examples of 19th century architecture) and two mysterious tunnels, said (with somewhat dubious historical methodology) to have been part of the Underground Railroad. We will also be visiting Steubenville murals where-ever historically appropriate (i.e. not the Dean Martin mural). The class will receive handouts concerning local lore and Catholic history, on, for instance, Father Prince Gallitzin, Apostle to the Alleghenies; St. John Neumann, Bishop of Philadelphia; the History of Beer Production in the city of Steubenville; the Mystery of the Wizard Clip — and so on. By the end of the class, students will be expected to write an essay explaining a great moment in local history and to pitch it to the Herald-Star for publication, and a folk song encapsulating a moment or a character of American history.
